Meaning stays proportionate partly because life keeps interrupting it. Hunger, a late train, work, a bill, a cat wanting food, a friend who disagrees, sleep changing the emotional temperature of a thought: the day keeps placing other claims beside whatever feels most important.
I call these ordinary correctives. They are not enemies of imagination but its friction: other minds, bodies with limits, evidence that resists us, and routines that continue whether or not the inner story feels important.
Sleep is one corrective because conviction has weather. A thought that feels self-evident at three in the morning may feel less complete after breakfast. That does not prove it false; it shows that the felt authority of an interpretation can rise and fall with exhaustion, arousal, isolation and fear.
The body is another. Charged states pull attention toward signs, prediction, destiny, threat or explanation; the body asks simpler questions. Have you eaten? Are you frightened or in pain? When did you last rest or speak to someone who knows you well? Grounding can sound trivial beside metaphysical urgency, which is precisely its strength.
Other people provide a different friction. They are not automatically right, but they bring an independent centre of experience into the room: ‘I can see how powerful this feels, and I am not seeing the same thing.’ The sentence protects both the force of the experience and a world not fully organised by it.
Routine distributes authority. Breakfast has a claim. A promise made yesterday has a claim. Work, money, medication, art, grief, humour and rest have claims. Sovereignty becomes harder when the day contains several legitimate authorities rather than one totalising meaning.
Recovery need not mean becoming boring, sceptical or spiritually empty. A powerful meaning should, however, be able to survive contact with breakfast. If it depends on sleeplessness, isolation, secrecy and the abandonment of every competing responsibility in order to remain convincing, that dependency tells us something about its relationship to life.
The ordinary correctives therefore do not answer the question, “What did this experience ultimately mean?” They answer a more immediate question: “What keeps me free enough to continue asking?” That freedom is one of the quiet foundations of this book.
