How meaning shapes our room to move

The Dream State Compass began with a lived problem: what happens when meaning takes hold, choices narrow, and even the people trying to help hold power of their own?

The project asks how meaning and support can remain open to question, and how the circumstances of a person’s life affect the choices available to them.

Finding direction

A compass does not tell a traveller what a landscape ultimately means. It helps preserve direction, proportion and the possibility of correction when the landscape becomes difficult to read.

Across the project, orientation repeatedly returns to relationship, evidence, time, body, conditions, dignity, responsibility and choice.

The central question is:

What is guiding what happens here, what can still question it, and what would make another response possible?

How the Compass moves

Experience → Meaning → Authority → Agency → Responsibility → Possibility

Experience can become charged. Charged experience can acquire authority. Authority can narrow available action. Relationship, evidence, time, conditions and practice can reopen alternatives.

The movement is recursive. New possibilities alter future conditions, and future conditions shape what experiences can come to mean.

What did this life feel like from inside it?

The memoir is the emotional and moral ground of the project. The witness comes before the theory.

When Meaning Becomes Sovereign (philosophy)

When does meaning acquire more authority than it can responsibly hold?

This book gives the project its language of jurisdiction: the territory an interpretation comes to govern, and whether it can still be questioned or corrected.

Threshold Crossing (model)

How can unusual experience acquire perceived authority and reduce or restore agency?

Its research-facing sequence is Conditions → Crossing → Form → Perceived Authority → Agency.

The Needs We Carry (ethics and practice)

How should need, authority, agency and responsibility be negotiated when distress and care redistribute power?

Authority should be proportionate, transparent, reviewable and directed toward making itself less necessary.

The Humans We Become (human philosophy)

How do inherited tendencies and socially supplied possibilities shape what humans can become?

The responses available to us are shaped partly by other people. A relationship, story or opportunity can make a future imaginable that we could not previously see.

What keeps the work grounded

Interpretations need to stay connected to evidence, relationships and their consequences. When support or authority affects another person’s life, that person’s agency and experience must matter. Responsibility also depends on the choices that were actually available, just as hope needs to take real circumstances seriously.
